Pour la première fois dans ce livre, le cinéma direct est envisagé du point de vue des techniciens : il donne une description des grandes et des petites innovations apportées par les cinéastes du direct à l'ONF. Cet ouvrage est basé sur des archives jamais explorées et il propose une étude de films, comme ceux du réalisateur canadien-français Pierre Petel, inconnu des historiens du cinéma. A travers des liens entre les pratiques du cinéma direct et les autres films réalisés à l'Office, entre les pôles anglophones et francophones de cette production, ce livre replace les dispositifs légers et synchrones, qui caractérisent le cinéma direct, dans l'histoire du cinéma et, plus largement, dans l'histoire des techniques. Etudier le cinéma léger et synchrone à partir du pôle québécois présente plusieurs avantages. Tout d'abord son rôle dans l'évolution technique est primordial : beaucoup d'améliorations ont été apportées grâce à la recherche menée par les techniciens et les cinéastes de l'ONF. Ensuite, en raison de sa situation géographique et linguistique, les cinéastes de l'ONF étaient en relation étroite avec les cinéastes des deux autres pôles : le cinéma-vérité en France et la production de l'équipe de Richard Leacock aux Etats-Unis. Enfin, pour des raisons administratives, l'Office a conservé beaucoup de traces de cette période, qui sont très utiles à l'historien.
